    Bryan Murphy

Paperback (Cooper Square Publishing Llc, Oct. 1, 2000)
A wonderful way for kids to experience the magic of science. The Experiment With series offers simple experiments that help children test and observe basic scientific principles. The whole family can get involved with these experiments, which are explained clearly and with the help of colorful photos.Grade 2-4― Experiments and activities that don't quite succeed in introducing various science concepts. Many of the simpler projects, like making a cardboard model of an arm and elbow joint, are not interesting enough to excite most children; other, more involved ideas (making a periscope or an ``indoor rocket'') may intrigue some. The need for : adult help is appropriately noted. Many concepts, such as solar energy and inertia, are introduced within the text without much explanation and with no related projects. Readers learn what levers do, but not why or how they work. Gravity is discussed, but the accompanying experiment neither explains nor enlightens further.

  • Air

    Bryan Murphy

Hardcover (Cooper Square Publishing Llc, Oct. 1, 2000)
Two titles chock-full of activities that kids can do on their own with household materials. Both are interesting to read and appealingly presented. Air introduces its properties and many uses. Detailed descriptions allow readers to make observations firsthand. Making wind and string instruments, hot-air balloons, and paper airplanes are among the projects included. Water explores the composition and versatility of the compound in its multiple forms. Illustrated experiments demonstrate such principles as the water cycle, pressure, surface tension, and chromatography. Both volumes feature informative full-color photographs and illustrations and easy-to-follow instructions. Philip Sauvain's Water (New Discovery, 1992) is a comparable presentation. ―Zenata W. • Weather

    Miranda Bower

Hardcover (Cooper Square Publishing Llc, Nov. 1, 2001)
A wonderful way for kids to experience the magic of science. The Experiment With series offers simple experiments that help children test and observe basic scientific principles. The whole family can get involved with these experiments, which are explained clearly and with the help of colorful photos.Grade 2-4-While books on weather experiments are popular, this one is simple to the point of being misleading. It consists of many photographs and illustrations, each one captioned with two or three sentences. The experiments consist of a single photo and a few sentences describing an activity, not an experiment. The photos are clear and colorful, but the drawings are rather crude. Sketches of different kinds of clouds are indistinct.
